"Free Space Optical Communication: high-speed, long-distance terrestrial communication."
Aircision is an Eindhoven deep-tech company building free-space optical (FSO) terminals that deliver 1 to 10 Gbit/s over kilometres without radio spectrum. The same hardware supports defence (jam-free comms, drone datalinks, ISR) and civil use cases (telecom backhaul, infrastructure inspection, disaster response, agriculture). The roadmap moves from current ground-to-ground terminals at TRL 6, via drone-compatible variants, towards integrated-photonics next-generation systems with lower size, weight and power.
Roland Blok (CTO Aircision) has over 25 years of experience in the high-tech industry, specializing in system software development and integration. He combines physics, mathematics, electronics, and software engineering to develop effective technical solutions and works well in large multidisciplinary teams.
His achievements include co-designing the first ASML EUV metrology system and creating the software architecture for the first ASML EUV volume system. Currently, at Aircision, Roland leads efforts to deliver solutions for dual-use Free Space Optical communications.
During the Telecom Society #SemiCon event on Wednesday, June 24, Roland shares his knowledge and experience in design, architecture, and management to move projects forward.
